My guest today is Matthew Remski. Through his personal involvement in two cults, Matthew became interested in researching and writing about abuse and cult dynamics. I met Matthew through a facebook group that was discussing the revelations from Pamela Sahara Dyson's book about her life with Yogi Bhajan (published 1/8/2020). This book has opened the floodgates for people sharing abuse stories that had previously been silenced, and has inspired Matthew to write several blog pieces on this topic (links below). In this episode I get to speak with Sangeeta Kaur: a Vietnamese-American sacred musician who is also an opera singer, practicing Tibetan Buddhist, and the founder of her own non-profit (Empower with Art Productions). Sangeeta educated me on a some sides of the music business that were new to me, shared stories of a close-knit and large extended family, and spoke about many upcoming musical projects. Two projects she is particularly excited about are 1) an album with Peter Kater, and 2) a summer tour with a famous band she promises to clue me in on later! Tigran is the Assistant Conductor of the California Philharmonic and the Music Director of Northwest Mahler Festival, Port Townsend Symphony, Federal Way Youth Symphony and the Bainbridge Island Youth Orchestras. He recently made his Walt Disney Concert Hall conducting debut and has played alongside Sir James Galway during his induction into the Hollywood Bowl Hall of Fame with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Tigran is a prize winner in The American Prize—Vytautas Marijosius Memorial Award in Orchestral Programming and at the Global Music Awards. Deepak is an actor, singer, instrumentalist, producer and devotional chant leader. His current "day job" (as he calls it) is making music for an original TV show for Disney that chronicles the adventures of a girl detective in the Royal Court of India. His passion project of the moment is a band called Robot Nature, whose music can be heard wherever fine music is streamed or sold online. It was a pleasure to get to catch up with Deepak and hear more of his backstory and his amazing outlook on life. In this episode, I talk with Sam Bullington, the founder of Colorado’s Transgender Community Choir: Phoenix. Phoenix is a fully collaborative grassroots community of individuals who believe in the transformative potential of the arts for personal empowerment and societal change. Not exactly a traditional chorus, Phoenix is more of a safe space to take risks of self-exploration—whether around gender and identity, creativity and voice, or leadership and community building. Although many of its members are trans-identified, the choir is home for anyone who does not fit neatly into the gender binary, as well as all those touched by trans issues, including partners, parents, friends, and allies.
